Each year, innovations in hemp plastic technology hit the market and many companies are incorporating hemp plastics into their products. Hemp is proving to be a clean alternative to the highly polluting plastics that are damaging our environment. There are various types of hemp plastic; here, we will briefly take you through how these plastics are produced.

Why Is There A Need For An Alternative To Plastics?

There is no doubt that we are experiencing a major environmental crisis that takes many forms. Human beings have followed a non-sustainable development model for which we are now suffering the consequences. The already perceptible change in climate, the significant loss of biodiversity and, of course, the pollution of the soil, the air and the seas are some examples of the damage we have caused to our environment.

Take our seas and oceans, for example, which we have turned into a gigantic repository of rubbish that threatens marine ecosystems. According to Greenpeace, every second more than 200 kilos of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans and seas, which is equivalent to more than 8 million tonnes of plastic waste a year.

In addition, more than 1 million seabirds and over 100,000 marine mammals die annually because of the damage caused by plastic, chemical and oil waste to the marine environment. Although some of these residues, which accounts for 80% of all sea pollution, can degrade and disappear in just over six months, many others take several hundred years to do so.

Meanwhile, plastic waste, including “microplastics”, leaves a great deal of air, sea and land pollution. A team of scientists recently demonstrated that these microplastics are dispersed through the air and reach remote natural areas, with concentration levels similar to those found in large cities.

International governments and environmental organizations have already begun to act to stop this serious global ecological threat. However, the targets set in the various international agreements for 2030 and 2050 seem somewhat unattainable for many countries and regions.

We need urgent measures to stop plastic pollution, and each of us must try to do our part to innovate, change mentalities and respect the environment. Our lives and future depend on it.

Hemp: A Raw Material Returns From The Past

Hemp is the plant that has the potential to help us reinvent the future of plastic and other materials. It is a clean, ecological, sustainable and renewable alternative. And it can replace the use of polluting materials in the production of goods in many fields, such as construction, automobiles, fashion, design, sports, and many others.

But hemp is not a new resource that responds to a specific ecological trend. Hemp is a raw material that returns from the past to help us rethink the future. For millennia, it has been used for its nutritional properties and multiple health benefits, and it has served as a raw material for countless products such as food, textiles, and medicines.

Hemp is among the crops that creates more biodiversity in its surroundings. Its cultivation allows us to obtain at low cost three raw materials: the seeds, the fibre and the pulp. Fibre has always been the most used for its excellent qualities, as it is the most resistant, absorbent and durable fibre of vegetable origin.

Reinventing The Future Of Hemp Plastics

It is becoming increasingly easy to find products aimed at various sectors made from vegetable fibres, such as flax, coconut and, of course, hemp. The aim is to replace the polluting materials that have been produced for decades. As we have said, hemp can replace many of these materials, such as plastics, thus helping reduce pollution worldwide.

The use of hemp not only entails an ecological benefit. It also improves the quality and performance of the products containing it. For instance, hemp fibre has long been used, instead of fibreglass, to make surfboards as it makes them much lighter, more flexible and resistant, and gives them sensational grip and buoyancy.

Thus, with increasing frequency each year, innovations in hemp plastic technology come onto the market. Today, even some of the largest automobile companies such as BMW, Mercedes and Bugatti incorporate hemp plastics in their products. The latest Porsche model, for instance, the 718 Cayman GT4, incorporates hemp fibre panels manufactured by the Dutch company Hempflax.

In short, bioplastic materials, including hemp, offer significant advantages for the environment. Because they are not made from fossil fuels, they do not produce carbon dioxide when decomposed. In addition, most of them are biodegradable. Everything indicates that they could be a very important part of solving the climate crisis.

Types Of Hemp Bioplastics And How They Are Used

1. Hemp Cellulose

Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer on Earth, and is an integral part of the cell walls of plants and many algae species. Although cellulose is mainly used to make paper, it is also used to make a wide range of different plastics, including celluloid, cellophane and rayon.

The first plastics were made from organic and non-synthetic materials, and cellulose was then a key element in the nascent plastics industry. Today, bioplastics have again attracted great interest for their diverse environmental benefits.

2. Cellophane, Rayon and Celluloid

Both cellophane and rayon are classified as regenerated cellulose fibres, and are similarly produced to make cellophane film or rayon fibre.

Celluloid is obtained by producing nitrocellulose (cellulose nitrate) first, which is mixed with camphor, a widely used plasticizer, to yield a dense, solid thermoplastic that can be easily moulded when heated.

Hemp cellulose can be extracted and used to make cellophane, rayon, celluloid and a variety of related plastics. Hemp is known to contain around 65-70% cellulose, and is considered a good promising source, largely due to its relative sustainability and low environmental impact. By comparison, wood contains around 40% cellulose, flax 65-75% and cotton up to 90%.

Hemp grows faster than most tree species, and requires fewer pesticides than cotton or flax. However, a significant amount of fertilizer is required when grown in some soils, and it also needs a relatively large amount of water.

3. Other Products Made From Hemp Cellulose

Cellulose can be used to manufacture a wide range of plastics and related substances. The difference in physical properties is largely due to the length of the polymer chains and the degree of crystallization.

Cellulose is extracted from hemp and other fibre crops using different methods. The raw pulp can be hydrolysed, i.e. separated into its component parts by adding water at 50-90° C. It can also be immersed in a weak acid solution to separate the crystalline sections from the amorphous ones, thereby producing cellulose nanocrystals.

Extra heat and pressure can also be applied to it to produce an interesting form known as nanocellulose. This is a “pseudo plastic” that resembles a viscous gel under normal conditions, and becomes more liquid when agitated or stressed.

Nanocellulose or microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) has a wide variety of potential applications. It can be used as a reinforcing material in plastic compounds and as a highly absorbent agent to clean up oil spills or oil slicks. It can also be used to manufacture sanitary products, and as a low-calorie stabilizer in food technology.

The Answer is Yes, Hemp Fabric is Eco – Friendly , scientifically the best alternative of cotton.  Fabric made of hemp are known to be the strongest among all natural fiber’s.

There are many advantages to using hemp as a fabric but a handful of disadvantages as well. To fully explore these facets, however, we first need to determine what hemp is and what it is not.
hemp fabric

How Is Hemp Different Than Marijuana?

Hemp, or rather, industrial hemp, is a variety of the cannabis sativa plant. This means it’s related to the same species of the plant responsible for many philosophical conversations in Eric Foreman’s basement. They differ in several ways. First, hemp will not get you high.

This is because the amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in hemp is less than 0.3 percent.

A marijuana plant, on the other hand, is any cannabis sativa plant with a THC content of greater than 0.3 percent, though even 0.4 percent won’t result in any psychoactive effect. This is all according to the FDA, of course.

Unlike marijuana, hemp is not illegal.

In India Uttarakhand Govt & Himachal Govt is working closely over the industrial hemp cultivation. Read more about the upcoming Himachal Hemp Policy and 1st Industrial Meet Organized In Dehradun,India.

What Are The Advantages Of Hemp Fabric?

Hemp is one of the strongest and most durable organic fibers available today, which makes it an excellent choice for outerwear. Hemp clothing is even said to have triple the tensile strength of cotton.

It blends easily with other fibers to produce a hemp-hybrid material, and this technique retains the strength of the hemp fibers while adding the comfort of softer, more refined fabrics.

On top of that, the cultivation of hemp for the purposes of creating fabric has a fairly low environmental impact.

hemp fabric

Is Hemp A Renewable Resource?

Hemp also possesses a natural resistance to many insect species and requires very little water. This makes it cheap and fast to cultivate and easy to care for.

According to Good On You, hemp is one of the most renewable, sustainable fibers available for creating clothing.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Hemp Fabric?

If hemp has any disadvantages at all, they are due to the fact that it is a natural fiber. Organic fabrics like cotton tends to wrinkle and crease in certain areas.

This repeated creasing can often lead to weak points in the fibers, which can create holes in the clothing. Luckily, hemp fibers are naturally stronger than cotton, and so they tend to last far longer on average, according to WayofLeaf, anyway. ‘

Still, its durability and low environmental impact means that it is most definitely worth the cost.

What Do People Think About Hemp Clothing?

Even though it is a perfectly legal crop and a perfectly viable fabric, hemp’s affiliation with marijuana has made for a problematic image.

For many people, this association is actually helpful, as it makes the fabric more desirable to those wanting to live a low-impact or zero-waste lifestyle.

But brands today are not just selling knitted pullovers for after-school smokers. These brands are knitting hemp into modern styles and fashions, making products that were once very limited in scope and production into something novel and, dare we say, chic.

The Crazy Connection Between Paper And Hemp

With the world being more environmentally aware than ever before, there is now a large focal point on conservation, and more specifically, paper conservation. Higher levels of greenhouse gases are detected every year, and plastered on every office printer room is a large sign, begging you to use paper more wisely and go green. What if we told you that the world may indeed have been a very different place if the Hemp industry was not beaten in the early 1900’s?

In 1916, agricultural scientists in America discovered that it was possible to make paper from hemp pulp. Not only did paper derived from hemp have more favorable properties, it also produced four times the amount of paper per acre compared to trees. Despite it providing a higher yield and being more environmentally friendly, by 1933 the production of hemp fiber was almost non-existent on a national scale. This certainly seems puzzling. Paper made from hemp fibers was used for more than 200 years, dating back to ancient China and the Egyptians. Even the declaration of independence was drafted on hemp paper before being copied onto parchment. So why the change?

hemp paper

The Reasons Wood Pulp Won:

Back when president Hoover was in power in the 1930’s, the owner of one of Americas largest newspaper companies, William Hearst, invested in thousands upon thousands of acres of woodland in order to provide enough pulp for the newspaper industry. Due to the size of his investment in timber, he tried to eradicate hemp as competition in the industry he sought to dominate.

He formed an alliance with DuPont, a petrochemical company that also provided the means necessary to turn wood fibers into paper through a sulfur based chemical process. After realizing the competitive opponent hemp posed to his investment, Hearst began an influential newspaper campaign to dissuade Americans from supporting the hemp industry. He portrayed hemp as an extremely dangerous and malevolent drug, weaving his agenda into the news in a way that would appeal to the racial fears of the time period.

His newspaper had a massive domino effect and happened to be one of the main driving forces behind the illegalization of the growth of plants belonging to the Cannabaceae family. While Hearst struck fear into the hearts of Americans to damage the hemp industry, his associates at the DuPont Corporation were pressurizing the United States congress to pass a bill that would impose sanctions on those who ‘sell, acquire or possess’ marijuana. Hemp, which looked similar, was then cast in a bad light due to the stigma around the family at the time. Essentially, the wood-pulp paper industry succeeded due to it being more profitable.

The world may have been in a vastly different state to what it is now should the hemp paper industry have continued as it was, and here’s why:

Hemp Vs. Wood Pulp

  • Compared to its wood pulp counterpart, paper from hemp fibers resists decomposition and does not yellow or brown with age.
  • It is also one of the strongest natural fibers in the world, one of the reasons for its longevity and durability.
  • Hemp paper can be recycled up to 8 times, compared to just 3 times for paper made from wood pulp – not that recycling paper from hemp pulp would be necessary considering its veritable sustainability.
  • Hemp has a much faster crop yield – it takes about 4 months for hemp stalks to reach maturity, while trees can take between 20 to 80 years. Not only does it grow at a faster rate, but hemp also contains a lot more cellulose This quick return means that paper can be produced at a faster rate if hemp were used instead of trees.
  • Hemp pulp does not require bleaching or as many chemicals as wood-pulp. Using hemp instead of trees could dramatically decrease the number of toxins and chemicals polluting the earths water supply.

Now, this is not to say the continued use of trees in the paper industry is bad – in fact many companies are using sustainable techniques which have an almost neutral carbon footprint. It is however unfortunate that this was not always so. Should the combined efforts of large corporations hadn’t dissuaded industrial scale hemp paper manufacturing, we may have lived in a greener, cleaner world than we are in today.

CBD stands for cannabidiol and belongs to a group of compounds known as cannabinoids, which are extracted from hemp. CBD has recently exploded in popularity because of its theorized health benefits and therapeutic properties.

cbd

The press frequently reports on the benefits of CBD. There is plenty of interest in CBD’s potential as a treatment for common health complaints, such as mild arthritis and poor sleep. CBD has also been discussed as a treatment for more serious mental and physical ailments such as anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

The actual effectiveness of CBD is still unclear. However, an increasing number of people are praising CBD and using it daily as a health supplement. There are also official medical applications for CBD. The FDA’s recent approval of Epidiolex (a pure CBD oral solution) as a treatment for severe forms of epilepsy reaffirming the clinical benefits of CBD.

CBD will not get you high like recreational cannabis use. Another cannabinoid known as THC causes the high associated with cannabis and hemp. Most regulated CBD products contain no THC and therefore will not get you high.

Is CBD legal?

Other than medical treatments approved by medical bodies, CBD can be purchased in many forms both over the counter and online. However, the legality of CBD differs between countries and regions.

In the USA, the availability and legality of CBD products differ between states. According to the World Population Review, CBD is fully legal in 17 states, including California, New Jersey and Washington. Other states, such as Texas, have only approved CBD for medical use; in some states like Idaho or Nebraska, the sale of CBD is fully prohibited.

In the UK, retailers can sell CBD as long as they sell and market CBD products following MHRA guidelines. CBD goods must be sold as a food supplement without any medical claims attached to the CBD content of the product.

Why is CBD so popular?

The popularity of CBD has recently been increasing exponentially and shows no signs of stopping. According to Vitality CBD, there are now over 6 million CBD users in the UK and over 1.3 million regular users.

Health and Wellbeing

Most users would cite the health and therapeutic effects as the main reason to purchase CBD. CBD is not only used to help treat medical problems, but also to promote wellbeing by supporting the body’s chemical balance, also known as homeostasis. This has opened CBD up to a wide audience of both younger and older customers, helping drive interest.

Being Seen as a Natural Choice

Due to CBD being a naturally occurring ingredient, it is often marketed and viewed as a natural choice – this is largely true. CBD occurs in nature organically through hemp, a material that has long been favoured by eco-conscious individuals.

There is evidence that growing hemp industrially can have a positive effect on the environment, especially compared to other crops. The environmental benefits of hemp production include capturing CO2 in an even greater volume than trees; hemp even helps regenerate soil thanks to it’s deep roots and short 4 month growth time.

Wide Range of Accessible CBD Products

CBD has become more accessible as brands have increased investment in their supply chains and research. By far, the most popular way of taking CBD is via CBD oils in either drop or spray form. These are tinctures which are applied orally, being held in the mouth while the CBD absorbs.

Vaping with CBD e-liquids is another popular way to dose CBD and offers the greatest amount of bioavailability. Many CBD brands now produce CBD gummy sweets, CBD creams, CBD tablets and even more bespoke products like CBD coffee syrups.

Why are celebrities investing in CBD?

Over the past few years, many high-profile celebrities have invested their considerable wealth into the CBD industry. It is becoming increasingly common to see stars across the world become involved in CBD. So, why are celebrities committing to CBD?

Public interest in CBD is growing

Interest in CBD has simply never been higher. According to research by SingleCare, 33 per cent of Americans have used CBD, while 64 per cent are aware of CBD products or CBD in general. The picture is similar in the UK, with a report by the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis concluding that CBD has “reached a level of market penetration (in the UK) that is unlikely to dissipate”.

Phillip Glyn, commercial director of Vitality CBD, had this to say about the link between public interest and celebrity involvement with CBD:

“As industries and markets grow, naturally more people will be encouraged to invest. The increasing celebrity involvement in CBD is indicative of the growing interest in the industry across society and will drive greater awareness and popularity of CBD globally.”

Clearly, growing public interest is a driving force behind celebrity involvement in CBD. However, as Phillip Glyn explains, industry leading CBD brands are expecting high-profile celebrity involvement to drive public interest in CBD to an even larger extent.

CBD is becoming more widely accepted

As the amount of evidence proving the potential for cannabis to be used medicinally increases, CBD is also being viewed favorably. CBD is slowly being legalized (albeit with restrictions in some places) in a greater number of regions.

Regulation has also steadily improved. A recent example of progress is the new FSA regulations in the UK, which came into effect in the UK in 2020. The new regulation requires CBD brands to submit dossiers for approval before they can continue retailing. The aim of this is to create clearer and more effective regulation, which should improve consumer confidence in CBD further.

The CBD market is growing fast

While surveys and research into people’s views and usage of CBD is useful, the raw financial progress of the CBD market may be more illuminating. By 2020, the global CBD market was worth an impressive $7bn; this figure is even more startling considering CBD was a controlled substance less than a decade ago in many large markets.

Based on the progress of the CBD market between 2016 and 2020, Global Market Insights predicts that the global CBD market will be worth in excess of $108.8 billion. GM Insights attributes this enormous growth to the increasing use of CBD medically, the improving regulatory landscape and increasing sales of CBD in reputable stores.

Which celebrities are involved with CBD?

There has been a recent influx of celebrities investing in CBD or developing their own brand. However, many famous individuals have been involved in the industry since its inception. Below is a selection of celebrities that are involved with CBD.

Beyonce and CBD

Beyonce has recently announced that she plans to start a hemp farm to extract CBD from the crops. The superstar singer has been a supporter of CBD for some time, announcing that she discovered it on one of her globe-trotting tours. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Beyonce explained her association with CBD up to that point:

“I discovered CBD on my last tour, and I’ve experienced its benefits for soreness and inflammation. It helped with my restless nights and the agitation that comes from not being able to fall asleep.”

If Beyonce ventured into creating her own CBD brand, it would almost certainly see huge success because of her enormous and fiercely loyal fanbase.

John Legend and CBD

In 2019, award-winning singer John Legend became an investor in a San-Mateo based CBD company. According to Legend, he has been an advocate of CBD “for some time” and explained his investment in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

“I was drawn to [the team] because they’re an innovative, family-run company, and they use science to deliver a consistent, high-quality product. I appreciate that they’re committed to setting a high standard within an industry that has to date been fairly unregulated.”

Legend’s comments reflect the growing attention to proper regulation across the CBD industry. As public acceptance grows, clamor for guarantees on CBD product’s quality and safety has too.

Kourtney Kardashian and CBD

Reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian has a longstanding association with the cosmetics industry which she has now grown to include CBD. In late 2019, Kourtney Kardashian announced she would release a CBD serum.

CBD cosmetics are one of the many applications that CBD has found and the Kardashian clearly sees a future for the ingredient within the industry. CBD can effectively work alongside other skincare ingredients, with the highly regarded hyaluronic acid also a part of this CBD eye serum’s formulation.

Also in 2019, Kourtney’s sister, Kim Kardashian, threw a CBD and meditation themed baby shower to celebrate the upcoming arrival of her daughter, Psalm West.

Whoopi Goldberg and CBD

Whoopi Goldberg has been a long-time supporter of cannabis and its use as a treatment. The Hollywood star was one of the first main supporters of CBD and started a brand in 2016 with business partner Maya Elisabeth. Elisabeth had plenty of previous experience in the CBD industry, having founded her own company focusing on edibles in 2008.

Goldberg and Maya’s company created CBD products tailored for a female audience, including CBD oils, CBD edibles and CBD bath products. However, the company ceased to operate when both partners parted company in early 2020.

However, this episode does not seem to have soured Goldberg’s passion for CBD and hemp. Reports indicate that she plans to launch a new brand later in 2021; time will tell if CBD plays a part in the product lineup.

Mike Tyson and CBD

Former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson was one of the first celebrities to exploit the growth of the booming CBD industry. Since 2016, Mike Tyson has been involved in cannabis and CBD retail alongside business partner Rob Hickman.

There are personal reasons behind Tyson’s involvement with CBD and the business itself has performed admirably since its beginning. It is likely the inspiration behind many stars’ involvement in the industry. Tyson’s company sells a selection of hemp derived products and includes a selection of CBD tinctures and even drinks.

Abhay Deol Talking About Hemp On World Health Day

He’s making an attempt to be aware of what he believes through a social media post that says “The world needs Hemp” and on World health day 2019 that says

“Today is world health day. I would like to bring your attention to a much-maligned plant, Hemp. Faster to grow and stronger than cotton requires much less water. Environmentally friendly, a good source of protein and essential fatty acids, we must introspect as to why it is banned in most parts of the world. It’s time to put the planet over profits. Historically it has helped build our culture, let’s go back to sustainable living!”

The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, the follow-up to the Cayman GT4 racer, is finally here! They have made it faster than the previous model and greener. Some components of the vehicle are made out of Flax and Hemp. They took flax and hemp fibers and arranged them to compose a similar pattern that one would find in components built from carbon fiber. It is the first ever race car to be made out of hemp.

hemp car

The material is a low-cost alternative to carbon fiber that is a lot better for the environment. Another one of the major environmental advantages is its biodegradability. They used this brilliant material in the new Clubsport’s doors and rear spoiler. Porsche describes it as a “natural-fiber composite material” which is made from an “organic fiber mix” sourced from agricultural byproducts such as flax or hemp fiber.

Agricultural byproducts like flax and hemp are great because they can achieve nearly the same rigidity as carbon fiber. Natural-fiber composites provide eco solutions for the creation of lightweight parts. The 718 Cayman GT4, with its hippie body panels and its single seat, for example, weighs just 1,320 kg (2,910 lbs). Plus, they are dramatically cheaper to use, produce, and cultivate.

hemp car

The only thing is, the material is not as strong as carbon fiber and if it takes on water it can swell. However, it is unlikely the new Cayman GT4 will be left in the rain for any appreciable amount of time since it is a track-only race car (not a street legal vehicle).

Marc Depestele, President of the CELC Technical Section, said:

“By establishing its European Scientific Council, the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp [CELC] has been able to lay the foundation for a long-term R&D strategy, helped along by the remarkable properties of flax (of which Europe is the world’s leading producer) and guided by an industrialization process in which open innovation plays a prominent role. The result has been a set of solutions that are adapted to new applications, as dictated by market imperatives. This new reality has provided the opportunity to demonstrate that flax and hemp fibers are not limited to the role of a substitute for fossil resources. They can capitalize on their combined environmental benefits and exclusive mechanical properties.”

Top Speed lists some of the most important advantages over the carbon and glass fibers as follows:

  • Low density (1.5 vs. 2.54 for glass fiber)
  • Higher specific stiffness than for glass fiber
  • Better vibration damping than for carbon or glass fiber
  • Better thermal insulation than for carbon fiber
  • Better acoustic insulation than for carbon or glass fiber
  • Impact response
  • Fatigue behavior
  • Biodegradability
  • Radiowave transparency
  • Hybridization
  • Recyclability

Aside from the hemp stats, Fritz Enzinger, Porsche’s head of motorsport, says:

“The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport possesses significantly more racing genes than its successful predecessor. The power of the engine has increased considerably. At the same time, we were able to increase the downforce and cockpit is now even better suited to drivers’ needs.”

The Cayman GT4 comes in two versions: Trackday and Competition. Trackday is for amateur drivers that just want an expensive toy, while Competition is for professionals who plan to race this thing for real. The following lists are a few other features and things to know about the car.

The entry-level Clubsport carries:

  • 3.8-liter flat-six (paired to a 6-speed PDK)
  • 425 hp (which is 40 more than the GT4 it replaces)
  • Rear wheel power through a diff locker (so dirty power slides shouldn’t be an issue)
  • 380 mm discs all around (those are 15% bigger than the road car’s)
  • A six-point harness (to keep you in your seat under hard braking)

In addition, you can get:

  • An 80-liter fuel cell
  • A handheld fire extinguisher
  • A rescue hatch in the roof
  • and ABS ESC and TC can all be turned off if you’re so inclined

The Competition model comes with all of the above and these additional features:

  • Adjustable shocks
  • An extra 30 liters of fuel
  • Adjustable brake bias
  • An integrated air jack system
  • A quick-release steering wheel
  • Automatic fire extinguishing
  • And more

hemp car

All in all, the fact that Porsche is using this material shows their commitment to the production of sustainable motorsport vehicles – something not many companies are actually utilizing to their full capacity.

The company says there are plans to make a street legal version of the 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 but it will not sport the 3.8-liter, six-cylinder engine like the Clubsport. A few other things may differ, but one thing is certain – hemp may just be the next major change in the industry and Porsche is already on board.

If you’re looking to buy one, consult your local laws before you import one of these things since hemp has a strange legal status in America right now.

As hemp becomes more extensively researched and widely available, we are starting to realize the true power of this special plant.* But it still generates a lot of confusion. Today, we’re clearing up the murkiness surrounding hemp oil and hemp extract products and how to take them safely to reap their wide array of benefits

An introduction to HEMP.

There are many varietals of the Cannabis sativa plant, all of which contain different amounts of THC (the psychoactive component), CBD (a nonpsychoactive component), and other phytocannabinoid components.

Cannabis sativa varietals that have more than 0.3% THC (much more) are commonly referred to as marijuana. Hemp is a genetically distinct plant varietal of Cannabis sativa that contains less than 0.3% THC (i.e., trace levels), and it will not get you high.

For a long time, researchers were only concerned with studying delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component that is concentrated in marijuana. However, within the past decade, they have become increasingly interested in the therapeutic benefits of the other compounds found in both varieties but especially concentrated in hemp, namely cannabidiol (CBD).*

It’s important to know that although THC and CBD are the most studied components of cannabis, there are many more active compounds found within the plant, such as the phytocannabinoids cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC), cannabinol (CBN), and tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), as well as terpenes and flavonoids.

Researchers believe that whole-plant hemp oils and extracts that contain these other compounds are more beneficial than isolated extracts of just CBD, for example, due to a synergy phenomenon called “the entourage effect.”*

DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEMP OIL.

So we’ve established that hemp is distinct plant, genetically and in phytocannabinoid composition, and that “industrial” or “agricultural” hemp is a Cannabis sativa plant that is comprised of less than 0.3% THC. But what’s the difference between all of the hemp extracts out there? Here’s the gist:

1. Hemp oil extract

Hemp oil extract has been extracted from the aerial parts (leaves, flowers, and stems) of the hemp plant, mainly for its entourage of native, beneficial compounds called phytocannabinoids.*

The most well-known of these compounds is CBD. However, unlike isolated CBD extracts, full-spectrum hemp oil is a whole-plant extract, so it contains a blend of many different phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, all of which work together, imparting the entourage effect. Broad-spectrum hemp oil is typically full-spectrum minus the THC.

In the body, cannabinoids interact with and support the endocannabinoid system—a homeostatic physiological system that affects the brain, digestion, immunity, and more.*

2. Hemp seed oil

As the name implies, this is oil that has been extracted from hemp seeds. Unlike hemp oil, hemp seed oil contains little-to-no phytocannabinoids and is instead extracted for its healthy fatty acid profile. It is typically used for culinary purposes, as well as to support healthy skin, nails, and hair.*

3. Hemp-derived CBD oil

Hemp-derived CBD oil is an isolated extraction of the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (aka CBD isolate). This means it contains only the phytocannabinoid CBD and does not reflect the full array of native plant compounds in hemp.

EXTRACTION METHODS:

There are a few ways to extract phytocannabinoid-rich oils from the hemp plant, all of which have their own benefits and drawbacks:

1. CO2 extraction

In this extraction method, the hemp is exposed to high-pressure, low-temperature CO2 gas, which helps isolate and preserve the cannabinoids in the oil. This technology is considered the cleanest (i.e., no solvents) and most premium. Thus, a hemp oil that’s 100% CO2 extracted is considered to be the most high-quality format. The only drawbacks are slow extraction time and high production costs, meaning these products can be on the expensive side.

2. Ethanol extraction

Ethanol extraction is considered safe and nontoxic in small amounts. The main drawback is that ethanol extraction can destroy the plant waxes, which can have health benefits.

3. Olive oil extraction

Olive oil itself comes with a slew of its own health benefits, thanks to its high level of anti-inflammatory omega-9 fat oleic acid. In this method, plant materials are heated with olive oil to extract the cannabinoids, but all that heat can affect their stability and potency.

4. Butane or hexane extraction

These solvents do a great job of extracting the cannabinoids from the hemp plant, but some residues of these solvent chemicals remain after the extraction process, which can be potentially harmful to your health.

HOW TO TAKE HEMP EXTRACTS

Hemp oil extracts can be consumed orally or sublingually (under the tongue). Sublingual application of hemp oil is a common delivery route for tinctures and is thought to facilitate a fast onset of action of the CBD and its partner cannabinoids.

Capsules are a convenient way to deliver hemp oil, and they allow for more controlled and consistent doses over time. They also allow for other botanicals to be included (i.e., multi-ingredient formulas).

Topical hemp oil products are different than oral supplements, and they can be applied directly onto the surface of the skin.

HEMP OIL EXTRACT BENEFITS.

1. It promotes relaxation and eases stress.

Hemp-derived CBD has been shown to reduce anxiousness in clinical research.* Hemp oil extracts containing CBD have also been shown to improve resilience to stress and perceived life pleasure.*

2. It nurtures the endocannabinoid system.

You might think about supporting your immune or cardiovascular systems on the daily, but what about the endocannabinoid system? Science indicates that nurture of this unique (and comprehensive) physiological system is important for its care, optimal function, and to support a healthy endocannabinoid tone in our body. Phytocannabinoids from hemp oil are one practical and reliable way to do that.*

3. It supports a good night’s sleep.

Hemp CBD has also been shown to help us snooze, with sleep scores significantly improved in clinical research.* Of course, this benefit is dependent on timing (i.e., during wind down before bedtime) and dose (typically 40 mg or higher of CBD), which currently lacks clinical consensus and can be quite individualized.

HOW TO CHOOSE A HEMP OIL PRODUCT

When deciding which hemp oil extract to use, these are the criteria you should look for:

  • The hemp plants should be 100% organically grown to minimize exposure to pesticides. Look for European Union certified organic agricultural hemp, which has strict purity standards.
  • The hemp oil should be extracted using CO2, ethanol, or olive oil. Avoid butane or hexane extraction as it can leave behind harmful solvent residues. If opting for olive oil, make sure you store in a dark, cool place to prevent rancidity.
  • Above and beyond characteristics of hemp oil include DNA testing that confirms the identity, safety, and historical use of the hemp strain. You’ll also want to ensure the product undergoes quality testing of the hemp oil ingredient and finished product, to ensure purity from contaminants and potency of the actives.

HOW MUCH HEMP OIL SHOULD YOU TAKE ?

There are currently no standard hemp oil dosing guidelines or defined upper limits. However, hemp has been safely consumed for millennia. In scientific studies, long-term use of 1,500 mg of CBD per day (and even and doses as high as 6,000 mg of CBD per day) have been well tolerated in humans.

But each person has a different genetic and biochemical makeup. This means individuals will respond differently to the same dose of hemp oil, so you will have to experiment to see which dose is best for you.

SAFETY & SIDE EFFECTS

Hemp oil extract is generally considered safe. Feeling tired is a common “side effect” (or benefit, depending on your goals) at higher potencies of hemp CBD.* And though quite rare, some less pleasant side effects have been reported with CBD including decreased appetite, nausea, and loose stools.

CBD oil benfits - Indian Hempstore

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is an extract derived from Cannabis sativa (marijuana plant). CBD oil contains only CBD as the active ingredient after excluding tetrahydrocannabinol [THC] or terpenes. It does not have the same psychoactivity but becomes an effective sedative and hallucinogenic substance, an eminent cure for relieving pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs. The oil is made from the CBD extract of the cannabis plant and further diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil. Due to its therapeutic benefit, CBD is gaining momentum in the health sciences in order to ease chronic pain and anxiety.

What are its uses?

  • As a pain relief
The human body produces endocannabinoids, a neurotransmitter that binds to cannabinoid receptors in order to regulate vital functions of the nervous system including pain. CBD impacts the endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interaction with neurotransmitters. Henceforth it has been shown effective in reducing pain in diseases like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • As antidepressant
CBD has the ability to act on the brain’s serotonin receptors that regulate neurological activities like mood, anxiety, aggression, and social behavior. Hence it is used as a treatment for insomnia, anxiety, depression, or any post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Reduce cancer-related symptoms
The chemotherapy involved in the cancer treatment induces certain symptoms like nausea, pain, or cognitive issues. A study shows that a one-to-one combination of CBD and THC administered via mouth spray reduces chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting. CBD helps to reduce symptoms related to cancer and even contains cancer-fighting properties.
  • Prevents acne
CBD oil prevents sebaceous gland cells from secreting excessive sebum and even strives for anti-inflammatory actions by restricting the activation of “pro-acne” agents like inflammatory cytokines.
  • Neuroprotective property
Since CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system and other receptors of the neural system, it shows a valued impact in treating neurological disorders like epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.
  • Heart Health
CBD has powerful antioxidant and stress-reducing properties that help in reducing the inflammation and cell death associated with the heart. Due to such anti-anxiety and stress properties, CBD may help lower blood pressure.

What are its side effects?

CBD or CBD oil shouldn’t be used without medical prescription or supervision. Verify the proper method and use it with your doctor to ensure your safety and avoid potentially harmful interactions.

Here are certain side effects noted with the use of CBD or CBD oil.

  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in appetite and weight
  • Fatigue
  • It can certainly interfere with undergoing medications.

Is it Legal?

Though there is much to be researched about the efficacy and safety of CBD, recent studies prove it as a safe, powerful natural treatment for many health issues. The legality of the CBD depends upon its nature and derivation like Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal for medical use at the central level but still illegal under some state laws. The Marijuana-derived CBD is illegal under the central level but remains legal under some state laws. However, the nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved.
